Friday Five (thoughts and favs)

My thoughts
  1. Hair today, gone tomorrow. I cut the worst hair cut yesterday. I don't know what I was thinking. Here's what I said "I want some bangs, a couple inches off and to go a bit darker. So why did I want to look like Janeane Garafalo. *sigh* (I used to have long curly hair like Julia Roberts! Keep in mind i said her HAIR, by no means do I look like her!) Why did I want so much of a change right before LA. (so suzanne young if you read this - i guess you and I will be hanging out together drinking and sobbing over our hair issues :) I will say - its what I asked for. It's a cute doo, I just went a little crazy and want my long hair back. Just wait until I go red in the fall!
  2. Got to have a J.O.B! I've been working like a dog so my goal is to get revisions back to Secret Agent (who really isn't a secret, its just fun to call her that) before I leave for LA. Ive been working like a dog and am so happy with how it is turning out. I don't have time to waste - I need to bring in some cash off this gig.
  3. Mama don't let your babies grow up! My little girl starts Kindergarten in less than 2 weeks. She's all grown up and is already trying to tell me what kind of hair cut she wants for school. And so it begins. I am just glad I got alot of time to spend with her up until this point. :( I need to hurry and get this book done so I don't have a baby instead :) (JK honey!)
  4. You are what you eat? We just found out my little boy has a sensitivity to wheat and cows milk. I will repeat that for those who may be stunned - wheat and cows milk. Changing over to rice milk is not that big of a deal but wheat? Not even all gluten free stuff is wheat free. Anyway, we are transitioning/changing his foods and he won't eat. Now he has lost weight - so much I can now see his ribs and it is stressing me out!!! he's happy but he won't eat. I know I shouldn't but you can't help but wonder if kids can waste away.
  5. Oh Lover boy - Ah I thought Jill and mankini wearing Ed were so cute on bachelorette this week. I actually think he came across better at the Dish session. I mean he was funny! He was kinda all serious and gooby on the show. The outtakes of them were so cute. I totally would have gone for him too had they shown that side of him. I think I could look past the green mankini (That is if I wasn't married to a hotty myself :)
Sounds like I've had a bad week but it hasn't been that bad. Just a few irritants along the way.

My Favs

Judged by your book covers - Books have always been judged by their covers.I know most of us don't have much say but here are things to think about if you do happen to get to voice your opinion. After the Liar debate - I thought it was interesting.

Make the most of Media leads
- The key really isn’t getting the leads, the trick is now responding to them. Here is a quick guide that you might want to keep handy the next time a lead comes your way.

Market Savvy text - If you ask any Search Engine Marketing Expert they will tell you the importance of anchor text. So what is this exactly?

Borders marketing directly to Teens - Borders Group Inc. is launching a teens department to capitalize on such hot writers as Stephenie Meyer and Sarah Dessen, as young-adult authors provide a badly needed lift to booksellers.

The evolution of a cover - Caren Johnson shows some behind-the-scenes juice. Specifically how a cover comes about.

Have a great weekend! :)

I heard about that Borders deal, and I was so excited about it. My little girl (not so little anymore) starts high school in a couple of weeks. I feel your pain!

I love your blog, you always have tons of helping links!

That's awful about your hair! I hate having bad hair cuts. I know from experience. Now I always take a photo to show them, and even then they screw it up!

Sorry about the news with your boy, the wheat will be a pain. Have a great weekend too! =D

I'm currently going through a growth phase with my hair after an extraordinarily bad bang cutting experience. Not fun. Love the Reality Bites pic!

Maybe when you said 'a few inches off' they thought you meant the bangs?? Of course, me of the utlra-fine-hair-club would not complain..at least yours will grow out, right :D

Good luck wrapping those revisions up before LA. Have fun!!

I just got back from a repair cut. It's better, but yeah. We'll share that drink of tears. :-)

Don't worry, your little one will eat when he's hungry enough! There's a great book called Special Foods for Special Kids - it has kid-friendly recipes with substitution suggestions for allergies/sensitivities. It helped a lot when my daughter was allergic to egg.

Bad hair cuts/bad hair in general is the worst. Don't let it weigh you down in LA though!
Also, I hope your son gets better soon :)

Oh the hair cut! Oh the kindergarten! Oh the making money off the gig? I was like, check, check, and then... maybe someday! ;) So exciting for you.

I gave your last post a shout out in mine. Really got me thinking about just finishing up this second novel and diving into number three. Have to find the time. (She said at 10pm commenting on blogs!)

I feel your pain with the little one. My daughter has severe eczema and had allergies (requiring an epi-pen for some of them) to dairy, wheat, soy, peanuts, and eggs. Oh yeah, and dogs.

She still suffers but she grew out of the dairy/wheat ones within the last two years (she'll be four this month if that gives you some hope).

Its hard to explain to people why she's underweight when you finally have to say, she can't have PB&J sandiwches, she can't have sandwiches, she can't have mac n cheese, or spaghetti since pasta is wheat (you can buy rice pasta at some stores though) she can't have eggs, she can't have bread or cake or anything else a normal kids can eat! lol. It was a hard long journey but she finally gets to eat somewhat normally.

I went with Flaxseed bread. They may have it at Trader Joe's or Whole Foods or Fresh Market. We purchased it at a place called EarthFare but not I'm sure which of these you would have. We also stocked up with Rice Dream there or Walmart was actually the cheapest. But it got to be a pain to have to shop at about three separate stores each week. lol. Thank GOD you can store Rice milk in the pantry!

Anyhow, I'm sure the haircut looks fab! Feel free to hit me up on FB or send an email if you have questions about the allergies. Sorry this turned into a loooong comment!

Suzanne and Sarah - bad thing is it is a cute cut and exactly what I asked for: I just asked for too much too soon. dont you hate when that happens?

Shelli (srjohannes) said...

adrienne - thanks that makes me feel better. :)

Tess - Nope i asked for exactly what I got - that's the whole issue :) my hair dresser rocks. Me - Im the crazy one.

sara T - my hubby thinks it looks great. I think Im just in shock :)

Lazy writer - cant imagine.

lisa/laura - i think we are harder on our own hair. She actually fixed my bangs - I had chopped them myself - oi! I always do this the next day.

At least you're doing something different, and daring!

Would love to hear more about the wheat thing. My 8 year-old son has to follow the Feingold diet. He can't have dyes or high fructose corn syrup or preservatives. Also, he needs to be low-carb. And he's 57 pounds of a skinny, self-professed vegetarian! Feeding this little guy is my life's work.

I feel for you on the allergy thing. My son has had an allergy to dairy and soy since birth. He's now nearing two and we've been testing him out on a few things. It's looking good, so perhaps he's growing out it. So there is hope. If you need dairy free ideas, I listed all the products I found helpful during the past two years here Good luck!

I'm finishing up what I like to refer to as "the year of bad hair" in which my hair was fried off by over processing (mostly around the bang region)...I still have stubbly growth trying to make it's way through. Thankfully hair is a renewable resource! I'm sure your hubby's right, it's probably cute but you're not used to it yet!!!

Can't wait to see...I'll be the judge!

Ironically I just posted something on Twitter about my hair. Must be something in the air or maybe it's the SCBWI L. A. thing that's about to happen.

Anyway, this past month my hair has started curling. Really! And I have always had this straight mane that a curl wouldn't deem touchable. So what's that about?

At least your hair will grow and a new, improved cut will fix things. What do I do when I start looking like an older version of child star, Shirley Temple?

Shelli (srjohannes) said...

purple clover, fiction groupie, and Jennie - thanks so much. good to know it may end.

Kimberly and slideing on edge - my haridresser tried to talk me out of it but I wanted to be KRAZEE! :) It actually looks better now that my hair is not so shocked from all the changes i demanded.

I really liked the article about text anchors - thanks Shelli! And I'm looking forward to seeing the new haircut in LA!

Aw, it must be hard to see your little one growing up. Tough about the other kid. I used to babysit for a kid with similar allergies (those plus some others, including food dyes). On the plus side she has since grown out of it. Good luck with the adjustments to his diet :-/

You crack me up! You poor little boy ... and you ... yikes on the whole 'wheat' thing! The haircut ... oh gosh, I feel your pain! It will grow out soon (I know ... not soon enough!) ... and I'm sure it looks lovely!
