Bookanistas - The Story Book by David Baboulene (Giveaway)

The Story Book: A Writer's Guide to Story Development, Principles, Problem-solving and Marketing.

I've read a lot of "how-to write" books so I didn't think another one could help. But this one is worth the read.

This is a book for beginning writers as well as more established writers.

In The Story Book, author, scriptwriter, story consultant and Ph.D scholar of story theory, David Baboulene, helps us understand what makes a gripping story. Tips of the trade are given in several great interviews with some big names in the publishing and film industry.

He also includes some of his research on the history of storytelling as well as the overall psychology of a reader. The fun part is that David uses a lot of writing examples from movies (ie. Back to the Future) and other well-known books to help explain and show the points he's making. I found this helpful to see how his tips had been applied.

In addition, his books also covers the basics like:
  • the key parts of a story
  • the nuts and bolts of structural techniques
  • story development from beginning to end.
  • a series of story questions to analyze own WIPs
  • writing prompts
  • submitting your novel to agents or editors
  • coping with rejection
This is a must-read for your writing book collection.

I have 2 books to giveaway. Make sure you are a follower and leave a comment on:

I haven't heard of this one either. But if you recommend it, it must be good. I love writing because it's opened me up to a creative side of myself I never knew I had and I love making friends in the writing community.

I've never heard of this title, but it sounds like one for any writer's bookshelf :)

I love to write because I love to read. And so I write to tell the stories no one else has written.

I haven't heard of this book either myself, but sounds like it would be really helpful!

I love to write because I love stories. Developing my own and writing it down is my favorite thing in the world.

I would love to add this book to my collection of writer help books.

I love to write mainly because I like to give my imagination something to play in instead of my head. It's nice seeing a product come out of the hard work.

Sounds like a terrific book. I like having examples - they always help me out!

I love to write because it's the best way I know to use my creativity, relax and enjoy my 'me' time :)

I write to express myself and leave words for my future children.

I like to write because it captures and express things that I can't say verbally.

I love to write because it's the one place in my perfectionism-riddled life where mistakes are okay. Even when it's hard I love it.

Part of the reason I love to write is that it seems to complement my day job as a professor of computer science. Whenever the left side of my head gets too heavy, writing brings me back into balance.
